In plain English: Kruger Nav is an offline app. It has no user accounts and no analytics or advertising trackers. Your saved places, routes and sightings live on your phone. If you leave iCloud sync switched on, they are also copied to your own private iCloud so they appear on your other Apple devices. We can't see them, and we don't want to.
1. Who we are
Kruger Nav ("the app", "we", "us") is an independent, offline-first companion app for visitors to Kruger National Park. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by SANParks. This policy explains how the app handles information.
2. Information the app does not collect
The app does not require an account and does not ask you to sign up or log in. We do not collect, store on any server, or sell:
- Your name, email address, phone number or other contact details
- Your location history or GPS tracks
- The places, routes, notes or wildlife sightings you save
- Advertising identifiers or cross-app tracking data
If you use iCloud sync (section 3), your data is held by Apple in your own iCloud account. We cannot access it.
3. Information stored on your device and in your iCloud
To do its job, the app stores certain data on your device. This is not sent to us. It leaves your device only if you leave iCloud sync switched on (see below), or if you choose to export or share it:
- Your places & routes. Pins, saved routes and imported map layers are saved in the app's own storage on your device.
- Wildlife sightings & trips. The sightings you log, including the time and the place you choose or your current position, the trips they belong to, and the animals you have marked as seen.
- Wild Card. If you add your Wild Card to the app, its number, the name on it and its expiry date.
- Preferences. Settings such as your chosen map options are stored on your device only.
iCloud sync (optional, on by default). Your sightings, trips, “seen” marks, saved pins, saved routes, Wild Card details and the “Start trips automatically” switch are copied to your private iCloud database using Apple's CloudKit, so they match across your iPhone and iPad. This data is stored in your own iCloud account. We cannot see it, and it is not shared with anyone. Imported KML files and your map display settings are not synced. You can switch sync off at any time in the app's Settings menu; this stops the app sending and receiving changes, and the data on your device is kept. Copies already in your iCloud stay there until you remove them, which you can manage in your iPhone's iCloud settings. Apple's own terms and privacy policy apply to iCloud.
If you delete the app, the data on your device is removed with it. It may also be included in your device's own iCloud/iTunes backup, which is controlled by your Apple settings, not by us.
4. Location
With your permission, the app uses your device's GPS location to show where you are on the map and to provide turn-by-turn navigation. Positioning and navigation happen entirely on your device in real time — your location is not transmitted to us, and no location history is uploaded. A sighting you log keeps the place you choose, and is stored like your other sightings (section 3). The one exception to location staying on your device is the weather feature: to fetch a local forecast, the app sends an approximate position (rounded to roughly 1 km) to the MET Norway weather service, as described in section 5. You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings; the map still works, it just won't show your position.
5. Network connections
The app is designed to work fully offline. It makes only limited network requests, and only when you have a connection:
- Map & road data updates. The app periodically checks our content host (
data.krugernavigator.com) for updated road and closure data. This is an anonymous download of public map data. As with any web request, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) may process standard technical information such as your IP address to deliver the file; this is not linked to any identity by us. - Weather forecasts. To show the local forecast, the app requests weather data from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute's MET Norway service (
api.met.no). The request contains only an approximate position, rounded to about 1 km before it leaves your device — enough to identify the weather area, not where you are standing — plus the app's name and version and a developer contact email address, which MET Norway requires of all clients. No account or personal identifier accompanies the request, and we never see it. Forecast data is licensed under CC BY 4.0; MET Norway's own terms of service and privacy practices apply to their service. - Opening a route from our website. If you open a route saved on the krugernavigator.com route planner, by tapping its link or typing its name, the app asks our website for that route. The request contains the route's name and nothing that identifies you. As above, Cloudflare may process your IP address to deliver it. The app never sends your own routes to our website.
- iCloud sync. If sync is on (section 3), the app exchanges your data with your private iCloud database through Apple. This goes to Apple, not to us.
The app contains no advertising SDKs and no third-party analytics.
6. Sharing & routes
You are always in control of sharing. When you export or share something from the app, the file or link is created on your device and sent only to the destinations you select through the standard iOS share sheet.
Sharing a route as a link. A route shared from the app is a link (krugernavigator.com/share#…) that contains the route itself: its name, places, stop times and speed. Your notes are left out. Nothing is uploaded or stored on our servers, and the part of the link after the # is never sent to any server. Anyone who has the link can see the route, so share it only with people you choose. If the person opening it does not have the app, our website shows the route in their browser, which reads it on their own device.
7. Children
The app is a general-audience travel utility and is not directed at children under 13. Because it collects no personal information, it does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children.
8. Your rights
We hold no personal data about you on any server, so there is nothing for us to access, correct or delete on your behalf. Your data is on your device or in your own iCloud, where you stay in full control: delete individual items, switch iCloud sync off, or uninstall the app. Data in your iCloud is managed through your Apple account.
9. Changes to this policy
If the app's data practices change, we'll update this page and revise the date above. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect in a new version of the app.
